The exiled Asgardian god Loki meets The Other, 7 a leader of an alien race known as the Chitauri. Make a deal with them; In exchange for retrieving the Tesseract, a source of powerful energy of unknown potential, the Other promises Loki an army with which he can subdue Earth.

Nick Fury, director of the S.H.I.E.L.D. and his lieutenant, Agent Maria Hill, arrive at a remote research facility where an immediate evacuation of the facility begins and where physicist Dr. Erik Selvig is leading the investigation of the Tesseract. Unexpectedly the cube opens a wormhole, allowing Loki to reach the ground. Loki steals the Tesseract and uses his scepter to brainwash Selvig, a couple of agents, and Clint Barton, who flee with him.
